Chiari Malformation

A Chiari malformation refers to an abnormal cerebellum (the region of the brain located at the back of the head). In this condition, brain tissue extends below the opening in the base of the skull (foramen magnum) where the brain meets the spinal cord.  One type of Chiari malformation develops as the brain and skull are growing and presents later in childhood or adulthood.  Another type is present at birth.
