ROSA Knee Replacement

Knee Replacement Using Robotic Technology

If you are experiencing chronic knee pain, total knee replacement can help you regain mobility and get back to doing the things you love. If conservative treatment options have failed to provide relief, your Washington Regional Total Joint Center surgeon may recommend total knee replacement using ROSA® Knee System robotic technology.

How Does ROSA® Work?

ROSA®, which stands for robotic surgical assistant, is designed to help your specially trained surgeon tailor the placement of your knee just for you. Getting a precise knee implant fit is important to your comfort and overall experience following knee replacement surgery. ROSA® Knee uses data collected before and during surgery to inform your surgeon about details of your unique anatomy that may affect your implant fit, helping your surgeon carry out a more personalized surgery.

Before Surgery

With ROSA® Knee, a series of X-rays may be used to create a 3D model of your knee anatomy before your surgery. This 3D model enables your surgeon to plan specific details of your knee replacement prior to surgery.

During Surgery

The surgical procedure using ROSA® Knee is similar to traditional total knee replacement, but with a robotic assistant. The robot does not operate on its own. Your surgeon is in the operating room the entire time and makes the decisions throughout your surgery.

During the procedure, ROSA® Knee uses a camera and optical trackers attached to your leg. If your leg moves at all, the robot adjusts accordingly, helping ensure the plan your surgeon put in place is carried out. The data provided by ROSA®, paired with your surgeon’s skill, helps position your implant based on your unique anatomy.

After Surgery

After surgery, it is important to follow the recovery plan your surgeon recommends, which usually includes a brief hospital stay. Recovery time varies, but most people can drive after two weeks, garden after three to four weeks, and golf six to eight weeks after their surgery. Your surgeon will let you know when you can safely resume certain activities.
