Washington Regional Earns National Recognition for Heart Attack Care

Washington Regional Medical Center earned three Get With The Guidelines® Achievement Awards from the American Heart Association for quality treatment and care coordination for patients experiencing a heart attack.

Get With The Guidelines® - Coronary Artery Disease STEMI Receiving Center Gold

To achieve this designation, Washington Regional demonstrated its commitment to offering rapid, researched-based care to people with a type of heart attack known as an ST elevation myocardial infarction, or STEMI, which is more severe than other types of heart attacks. Recognition as a STEMI Receiving Center is designed to showcase hospitals that provide 24/7 support for STEMI. These important facilities coordinate with a network of referring hospitals and emergency medical services to provide guideline-directed STEMI and NSTEMI care.

Get With The Guidelines® - Coronary Artery Disease NSTEMI Gold

For this recognition, Washington Regional demonstrated its commitment to offering rapid, researched-based care to people with a specific type of heart attack known as a non-ST elevation myocardial infarction, or NSTEMI. Each year, more than 546,000 people experience an NSTEMI heart attack, which is caused by a partial blockage of blood flow to the heart.

Get With The Guidelines® - Target: Type 2 Diabetes™ Honor Roll

To earn this achievement, Washington Regional ensured patients with Type 2 diabetes, who might be at higher risk for complications, receive the most up-to-date, evidence-based care when hospitalized due to heart attack.

“Washington Regional is honored to be recognized by the American Heart Association for our dedication to providing the region’s highest level of care for patients who experience a heart attack,” said Zubair Ahmed, MD, Washington Regional’s medical director of interventional cardiology. “The Get With The Guidelines program helps us achieve that goal by putting proven knowledge and guidelines to work on a daily basis, giving patients the best possible chance of survival and furthering our mission of improving the health people in the communities we serve.”

“Effective and timely care is crucial for patients experiencing a heart attack. The American Heart Association’s guidelines call for specific interventions for these patients both in-hospital and post-hospitalization,” said Abhinav Goyal, MD, MHS, FACC, FAHA, American Heart Association volunteer, professor in the Department of Cardiology at Emory School of Medicine with a joint appointment in the Department of Epidemiology and chief quality officer for the Emory Heart and Vascular Center. Washington Regional is among the institutions recognized for their commitment to providing evidence-based treatment and care coordination, ensuring the best outcomes for these patients.”
