The Importance of Proper Helmet Use

Recent research has found that proper helmet use reduced head injury by 48%, serious head injury by 60% and the total number of killed or seriously injured cyclists by 34%.

“The best way to protect the brain is to wear a helmet every time you're on wheels, including bicycles, scooters, skateboards and skates, especially while outside,” says Sarah Webb-May, trauma outreach coordinator at Washington Regional.

“One real simple way to remember how to properly fit your helmet is the two-two-two rule,” Webb-May says. “We want to be able to fit one to two fingers above the eyes or eyebrows, two fingers on either side of the ear show you where the straps should lie, and you should be able to tuck two fingers underneath your chin with the clasp closed.”

Helmets have sizes documented on the inside. If a helmet is not properly fitting following the two-two-two rule, try a smaller or larger size. Some helmets are also size-adjustable, which may be a good option for children who are growing quickly.

“Depending on your activity, there's a specialized helmet available, and I recommend you choose whatever is best for you and for your activities,” Webb-May says.
