Washington Regional Trauma Center

Washington Regional is the only Level II trauma center in Northwest Arkansas, providing the region’s highest level of trauma care across 25 counties in Arkansas, Missouri and Oklahoma for patients with life threatening or critical injuries. The Washington Regional Trauma Center is prepared 24/7 with immediate coverage by general surgery, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, anesthesiology, emergency medicine, radiology and critical care specialists. Our trauma center team also includes specialists in interventional radiology, pulmonology, cardiovascular and thoracic surgery, urology, maxillofacial surgery, and ophthalmology.

Comprehensive Care

Washington Regional’s trauma services and care extend from injury to recovery. Our trauma team coordinates with emergency response agencies to provide immediate, lifesaving care. That care continues beyond initial treatment and is carried out by interdisciplinary teams in Washington Regional’s intensive care units, operating rooms, medical-surgical unit, rehabilitation services and other areas to ensure optimal outcomes.

Level I Trauma Center Designation

As part of a regional strategy to strengthen health care in Northwest Arkansas, Washington Regional is working to develop Level 1 trauma services in Northwest Arkansas to provide timely and lifesaving interventions for even the most complex medical emergencies. Washington Regional is currently working toward designation from the American College of Surgeons (ASC) as a Level I trauma center.

Academics and Research

Washington Regional and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences are training the next generation of emergency medicine and trauma care specialists. The UAMS/Washington Regional Graduate Medical Education Program and the UAMS/Washington Regional Emergency Medicine Residency Program will help direct new research and innovations in trauma care. Additionally, Washington Regional’s Trauma Center serves as a clinical rotation site for physicians in the UAMS General Surgery Residency program.

Washington Regional’s trauma team leads regional initiatives to improve trauma care, including presenting groundbreaking research at the American College of Surgeons Trauma Quality Improvement Program annual conference.

Community Education

The Washington Regional Trauma Center provides leadership in injury prevention through public education and continuing education for health care professionals across the region.

Fall Prevention

Falls are the leading cause of unintentional injury and deaths for people over age 65 and a leading reason for emergency room visits in the United States. Below are ways to reduce and prevent falls.

Make your home safe

  • Ensure adequate lighting; use nightlights in the bedroom and bathroom
  • Limit clutter on the floor and remove throw rugs or secure them with double sided tape
  • Use handrails with stairs and grab bars in bathrooms
  • Use assistive devices

Talk to your health care provider

  • Discuss any concerns about balance, dizziness or a recent fall
  • Keep an updated list of your medications
  • Have your eyes checked at least once a year and replace eyeglasses as needed

Stay active

  • Walk daily
  • Focus on strength and balance exercises
  • Wear proper footwear

Education for Health Care Professionals

Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) for licensed nurses

Every second counts when stabilizing life-threatening trauma cases. This course, taught by qualified nurses, prepares health care professionals with the knowledge, critical thinking skills and training needed to accurately assess and implement evidence-based interventions to improve outcomes for trauma patients.
