A Primary Care Clinic should have a board certified physician who sees all ages and treats the whole person. Patients should not be sent to specialists for costly and inconvenient care when the diagnosis, treatment and management can and should be done in the primary care setting where the doctor knows you and your individual needs. One should expect that their doctor would see them when in the hospital, not be seen by a Hospitalist who does not know you or your medical history. When urgent care needs arise, a clinic should be available to attend to you that day, not three days later. Every effort should be made to see you rather than refer you to the emergency room or walk in clinic when an office visit is all that is required. This saves you time and money. Laboratory, x-ray, lung testing, heart monitoring and minor surgical procedures should be available on site. Staying up to date on the latest advances from electronic medical records, electronic prescriptions, evidence based medicine and quality care directives should always be a priority. Patients should not have to sit in the waiting room for hours waiting on their appointment. Your time is valuable, too. Lab and test results along with returned nurse messages should be done in a timely manner without the patient having to call back a second time. Finally, a patient needs to feel like they are appreciated and well cared for and not just "a number."
