Scholarships
In addition to general scholarships, Washington Regional Foundation provides special scholarships for exceptional health care students. The special scholarships are listed below and are named in honor or in memory of outstanding health care professionals and other leaders in Northwest Arkansas. Recipients are chosen from among the general scholarship applicants each year; therefore, special application is unnecessary.

  • James Mashburn Scholarship" : Established in 1989 to recognize Dr. Mashburn's nearly 40 years of obstetrical and gynecological service to this community, this scholarship is available for any health care student.
  • Monroe B. Painter Scholarship: This scholarship was established in memory of long-time Fayetteville internist Dr. Monte Painter after his death in 1989. It is reserved for nursing candidates only.
  • Earl W. Eddins Scholarship: After former WRMC Administrator Earl Eddins retired in September 1991, this scholarship was established to pay tribute to his 15 years of service and dedication to health care in this area. The Eddins Scholarship is available to any health care student.
  • Kathryn B. Stout Scholarship: This scholarship fund was established by Mrs. Stout to benefit employees of Fayetteville City Hospital. Funds are available for Fayetteville City Hospital employees who are pursuing careers as registered or licensed nurses.
  • WRMC Employee Children's Scholarship: In 1989, the Foundation established this scholarship as a special remembrance for deceased WRMC employees. Children and grandchildren of current and deceased WRMC employees seeking a degree in health care are eligible.
  • Arthur F. Moore Scholarship: This scholarship honors the memory of Dr. Moore, a driving force in medicine, rehabilitation and health care education in Northwest Arkansas. The scholarship, established in 1997, is available to any health care student. However, special consideration and priority will be given to disabled and/or disadvantaged applicants.

Eligibility
Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Pursuing a career in health care in Northwest Arkansas.
  • Current grade point average of 2.75 or greater.
  • Preparing for positions in nursing, physical or occupational therapy, radiologic technology, respiratory therapy, and other related health care fields which are deemed to be "in critical need" by Washington Regional.
  • Willing to fulfill a service obligation to Washington Regional Medical Center, Fayetteville City Hospital, or other facility of Washington Regional after graduation.

To Apply
The Foundation traditionally awards annual scholarships just prior to the beginning of the fall semester. Applications must be received by the first Friday in May in order to be considered for assistance at this time. However, consideration may also be given to applications received at other times during the year assuming funds are available and that a critical need for that health care profession exists within Washington Regional.

A Scholarship Selection Committee chooses the scholarship recipients. The committee considers the following criteria:

  • Available funds.
  • Need of position at Washington Regional.
  • Academic record.
  • Personal interview.
  • Written narrative.
  • Financial need.

Applicants selected to receive annual scholarships are notified before the beginning of the fall school semester.

After graduation, individuals receiving scholarships from the Foundation are asked to work as members of the Washington Regional team in repayment for their educational assistance. In general, scholarship recipients will be asked to work full time for Washington Regional for one year for each year of school subsidized by the Foundation.

Scholarship Amounts
Scholarship Assistance is provided at an average of $750 per semester and is generally awarded on an annual basis. Scholarship monies are sent directly to the university or school where the recipient is enrolled. The money is earmarked, in the recipient's name, for tuition, books, supplies and other related school expenses.

However, disbursement of the funds is dependent upon the recipient's advancement toward a degree and maintenance of a 2.75 grade point average for each subsidized semester.
