Grant Supports Mobile Dental Clinic Services

Washington Regional Medical Foundation recently received a $125,683 grant from the Blue & You Foundation for a Healthier Arkansas. The funding will help Washington Regional Mobile Dental Clinic provide services to 1,000 uninsured and low-income adults throughout Northwest Arkansas.

Washington Regional introduced the Mobile Dental Clinic in September 2014. Since then, the 40-foot customized vehicle has been driven nearly 17,500 miles to several partner sites throughout the region to deliver free comprehensive dental services and preventive education to more than 2,500 individuals in need. Fully staffed with a dentist, dental hygienist and dental assistant, it features two exam rooms, a lab, an X-ray machine, sterilization system and computer network for medical records and scheduling.

The Mobile Dental Clinic partners with other nonprofit organizations that serve communities in need. After initial screening and assessment are conducted at one of these partner sites, patients who qualify can receive services at an appointment reserved just for them.

“The overwhelming need for the Mobile Dental Clinic has been demonstrated by the large number of new-patient applications we have received in the past 2 ½ years,” said Larry Shackelford, Washington Regional Senior Vice President-Outreach Services. “This generous gift from the Blue & You Foundation will help us to continue providing this important healthcare service and reaching members of our community who otherwise could not access dental care.”

The grant was one of 31 that the Blue & You Foundation recently awarded to health improvement programs across the state. Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield established the Blue & You Foundation in 2001 as a charitable foundation to promote better health in Arkansas.
