Medicare Compliance

In 1996 President Clinton announced a new partnership between federal and state agencies to intensify enforcement of laws relating to Medicare and Medicaid fraud, waste and abuse. The anti-fraud project identifies and attempts to correct fraud and abuse in these programs. The Department of Health and Human Services is leading these efforts. The Health Care Financing Administration, the Office of the Inspector General, the Administration on Aging, the Department of Justice and the Medicare contractors are also participating.

The government has issued compliance guides for healthcare providers to use in identifying and correcting any potential fraud and abuse in their facilities. Washington Regional has developed a system-wide compliance plan to meet the government's requirements and has appointed a compliance officer whose duty is to follow up on any concerns reported.
