Hospice

Hospice is a special healthcare program designed to meet the needs of patients and families who are faced with a life-limiting illness. The hospice goals are to assist the patient in living as comfortably and fully as possible at home. To achieve this goal, the hospice team offers a variety of services to both patients and their families.

The hospice program depends on trained volunteers and community support. Volunteers are needed to help with patient care, office work and special projects.  Donations and memorials made to Washington Regional Friends of Hospice are greatly appreciated; these funds assist hospice patients with financial needs.

Hospice Team
Hospice utilizes a team approach to lend support to the patients and their families. The team consists of the hospice medical director, nurses, nursing assistants, social workers, chaplains, volunteers, and the patient’s physician.

Washington Regional Hospice is the only agency in northwest Arkansas with a board-certified hospice physician as medical director, Stanley C. Bradley, M.D.

Inpatient Services

management, or respite for the family. Respite care in the hospital is limited to five days.

Hospice Nursing Home Program
Residents of participating nursing homes are eligible for hospice care. Hospice workers interact with the staff of a nursing home much like they would a caregiver in the family home. The services available to patients in the hospice nursing home program are the same as those available to the patients in their own homes.

Volunteers
Volunteers offer supportive services for patients and their families. The volunteers are trained to listen and provide practical help, such as:

  • Bereavement support
  • Delivering supplies/medication
  • Limited homemaking chores
  • Listening and caring
  • Respite care
  • Running errands
  • Staying with patients
  • Visits/phone calls

Washington Regional Hospice volunteers are screened and required to complete an intensive 30-hour training and to attend continuing education.

Bereavement Services
Hospice offers bereavement services including classes that provide an opportunity for people to share their feelings with others who are experiencing grief.  The hospice staff and volunteers offer contact with families through a monthly newsletter, cards and letters.  Individual bereavement counseling is available.

Certification and Payment
Washington Regional Hospice is a member of the National Hospice Organization and the Arkansas State Hospice Association.  It is certified by the State of Arkansas and the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Health Care Organizations.  Payment is available for hospice services through Medicare, Medicaid and many private insurance policies. Patients with limited or no payment source may request funds from Washington Regional Friends of Hospice to pay for services.  Washington Regional Hospice is a nonprofit organization that has been serving the needs of the terminally ill and their families since 1985.
